Will Your Tankless Water Heater Still Work When It’s Freezing Cold Outside?

Tankless-Water-Heater

You’ve upgraded the plumbing and water system at your house, installing a tankless water heater. However, because you’re not storing a tank of hot water, and the water is being spontaneously heated, you may wonder how effective the water heater will be in sub-freezing temperatures. The answer—though you need to take certain precautions to ensure that your tankless water heater doesn’t freeze in really cold weather, tankless water heaters are generally just as effective in cold climates as tank water heaters, and are not affected by outside temperatures.

Though most tankless water heaters are designed to be freeze resistant in temperatures as cold as -22°F, that freeze protection generally applies only to short term exposure to really cold weather. To ensure that your indoor or outdoor tankless won’t freeze up or become damaged in sub-arctic temperatures, it’s generally a good idea to drip water from a couple of faucets in separate parts of your home. Of course, when you have a tankless water heater installed, make certain that it’s not on an un-insulated outside wall where it will be exposed to freezing cold.
