Dallas Ft. Worth Plumbers

When you turn on the dishwasher while your watering the lawn, does your lawn sprinkler lose some of its power? If someone flushes the toilet while you’re taking a shower, do you notice a sudden decrease in water pressure? A loss in water pressure is a common complaint on the part of homeowners, especially in homes where mom may be doing a load of laundry, dad washing the car, and one or more kids taking showers all at the same time. So, what causes a loss in water pressure and what can be done about it?

What Can Cause a Loss in Water Pressure

If you’ve noticed a loss in water pressure in your home, it’s almost certain that the problem lies somewhere in your plumbing. While each case is different, the following could be the culprit:

Water leaks: Are there undetected leaks around joints or pipe seams? Do you have a burst pipe?
Pipe corrosion: Is there rust or corrosion restricting the flow of water through your pipes?
Sharing a supply pipe: Do you share a supply pipe from the water main with other homes? If so, is the pipe undersized or poorly fitted?
The location of your house: Do you sit at the top or bottom of a hill? If your house sits near or at the top of a hill, you could experienced reduced water pressure in comparison to those situated at the bottom of a hill.
Hot Water and Low Water Pressure: If your hot water supply seems to run out quickly and you’re having water pressure problems at the same time, the problem may be with your hot water heater. It may be time to replace your hot water heater, especially if it’s ten or more years old.
Clogged Aerators: If your water pressure problems seemed confined to only one faucet, check the faucet’s aerator. If it’s clogged with dirt and debris, clean or replace the aerator and see if your water pressure problem goes away.
Pressure Reducing Valve: If your home plumbing has a pressure reducing valve (PRV) installed on it, check and see if the setting is correct. Most PRV’s are bell-shaped devices installed near the water softener, water heater, or near the inlet water line between your home and the water meter. A licensed plumber can help determine if your PRV needs to be adjusted.

Diagnosing Your Problem – Hiring a Qualified Plumber

In order to determine what is actually causing your water pressure problem, it’s important to determine the source of the problem. If you live in an older home built in the 1950s or earlier, you may have corrosion in your pipes. However, depending on the location of your house and whether or not you have a pressure reducing valve installed, other factors may be at work. One of our licensed plumbers can perform a thorough check to determine what is causing the problem and the most economical way of fixing it.
