Before You Buy a New Faucet

Just because your faucet has a leak does not mean that you need a new faucet. Most drips or leaks in faucets can be fixed by replacing a washer or gasket. To do this, you should turn off the water to the faucet, drain the tap as much as possible, and then carefully take the faucet apart. Look for cracks or tears in a washer or gasket.

What to Look For in a Water Faucet

Water faucets come in a variety of styles, with a range of prices. The most important factors (other than whether the faucet fits into your budget) are:

The quality of the faucet—Higher quality faucets generally have more weight to them. The best faucets are made of brass, but you can also get faucets that are made of die-cast zinc and even chrome-plated plastic. The zinc and plastic models are usually cheaper, but less durable as well. Read the label to determine what the faucet if made of. If you can’t determine its construction, lift it. If it has some weight, it is likely of more durable construction.
The quality of the aerator—The aerator adjusts the flow of water coming out of the tap. The best faucets have aerators that prevent water from splashing when it hits the bottom of the sink.
The quality of the side spray/pull out spray—The side spray is the hose and sprayer that allows you to control direction and force of the spray. A pull out spray has a hose that recedes below the top of the sink. Avoid purchasing a faucet with a side spray that is entirely made of plastic. Also, look for quality reinforced rubber in your pull out spray that will not kink or crack with use.
