Tankless and Traditional Water Heaters

Tips for Determining Which Is Best for You

Tankless and Traditional Water HeatersWhether you’re building a new home or upgrading the plumbing to an existing residence, you want to consider the pros and cons of going tankless with your water heating system. Tankless water heaters have come a long, long way since the early days, when the water was lukewarm at best and couldn’t handle any meaningful demand. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of both systems:

  • Traditional water heaters—With a traditional water heater, you’ll have a reservoir filled with a quantity of previously heated water. The tank will be insulated, helping to prevent the loss of heat, but your water heater will have to periodically reheat the water to the temperature you want. Most traditional water heaters come with a 30 to 50 gallon tank, typically plenty of water for laundry, dishwashers and a shower or two. The unit may struggle to keep up if there’s a lot of demand in a short period of time.

Traditional water heaters are customarily cheaper to install than tankless water heaters, but are also usually less energy efficient, as they must run regularly to keep water hot. They are also prone to need servicing more than a tankless system. Traditional water heaters are also less costly to repair (in most instances), as they have a simpler design. Of course, traditional water heaters also take up a lot more space

  • Tankless water heaters—Tankless water heaters offer a number of advantages. They occupy far less space—often the size of a small toaster oven. Because they only operate on demand, they’re generally more energy efficient. They’re less susceptible to breakdown, too. With newer models, there’s virtually no wait time for hot water.

A tankless water heater will usually cost about two to three times what a traditional water heater costs, if not more. You may also have to reconfigure water lines. Tankless water heaters typically cost more to fix. In addition, if you are using multiple water outlets at the same time—a dishwasher and the shower, for example—the tankless may not be able to keep up.
