Prevent A Valentine’s Day Plumbing Emergency

Tis the Season to Be Clog-FreeValentine’s Day is right around the corner. While lots of people go out to eat on the big day, more and more American’s are staying home for a home-cooked meal lately. While that’s perfectly fine, even encouraged, make sure that you’re careful. Thanks to the increase in home-cooked meals, Valentine’s Day is becoming more and more of a bad word in the plumbing community. So, if you’re cooking at home this year, follow the following tips from us here at Public Service Plumbers to hopefully prevent a Valentine’s Day plumbing emergency!

Hot Water Is Your Best Friend

When you’re done cooking your meal, run some hot water down the drain. Doing so can help break up grease and fat that may be trapped in the drain trap. Warm water also helps food waste that may have found its way into your drains move through your pipes.

Don’t Put Grease Down Your Drain, Save It Instead!

The worst thing you can do to your plumbing is putting grease, fat, or oil down the drain. Sure, it might be a liquid when you pour it in, but in a few hours, that liquid grease will solidify, causing a clog.

If you’re cooking with a lot of oil or something that lets off a lot of waste grease, then keep a spare coffee can. Once you’re done cooking, pour the fat into the coffee can and let it harden. Once the oil solidifies (or cools to room temperature), put a lid on it and throw it in the trash. Again, never, ever put grease, fat, or oil down your drain or garbage disposal. Doing so is just asking for a plumbing emergency.

Treat Your Garbage Disposal Right

Garbage disposals are wonderful devices. They make cleaning up kitchen messes so, so much easier. However, this Valentine’s Day, make sure you treat your garbage disposal right. To treat it right, just avoid putting any of the following things down its drain:

  • Eggshells
  • Coffee grounds
  • Tough, raw vegetables like celery or carrots
  • Potato peels and other vegetable skins
  • Ice
  • Bones
  • Grease, fat, or oil
  • Fruit pies or other sticky sweets
  • Candy
