Helping You Deal with Low Water Pressure Problems

August 31, 2012 | Blog

As a homeowner, few things can be more frustrating than low water pressure. If you have a dishwasher, it won’t function most efficiently without adequate water pressure. It can take a long time to run laundry. If you try to wash clothes and dishes at the same time, you may get just a trickle from either source. There are ways that you can increase your water pressure. Public Service Plumbers can help.

At Public Service Plumbers, we have set the standard of excellence for reliability and customer service for more than 50 years. We make our services available throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Call us at (214) 753-4633 to schedule a service visit, or to learn about the most effective ways to heat and cool your home.

Factors That Affect Your Water Pressure

Assuming that you are getting adequate water pressure coming into your home, whether from public water services or from a well, there are a variety of factors that can contribute to low water pressure:

Gravity—Did you know that for every couple of feet that water has to travel vertically in your home, you lose about a pound of water pressure. If you have water lines running upstairs, you can experience a loss of 10 pounds or more of water pressure from where it enters your house (assuming it’s the basement). Also, if you live at the top of a hill, you may experience problems with water pressure.
Your pipes—You may have a small leak around a joint or seam, or there may be a buildup of corrosion or rust in your pipes. You may also be sharing your water supply line with too many of your neighbors.
The filters on your water—Any filter or water-conditioning unit will also decrease your water pressure, by as much as five pounds. Your spigot or shower head may also have a water restricter in it, designed to reduce pressure and volume. You could have a clogged aerator on your faucet. Your plumbing system may also have a pressure reducing valve, which can be adjusted. You may want to check to see that the setting is correct. An experienced plumber can help you make the necessary adjustments.
