A Checklist When You Need a Plumber

  1. Licensing and training. The first thing you want to confirm is that the plumber is licensed by the state of Texas. You will also want to determine what type of training the plumber has. Have they been trained in the factory by the different companies whose products they sell? Have they obtained a level of certification? If so, they should be able to provide you with a copy of the certificate. You should also ask to see copies of their liability insurance policy.
  2. Work ethic. In most instances, when you contact a plumber, you either have an emergency or have time constraints. You want to know that the person you hire will give your job the attention it needs. You can learn a lot from the way they initially deal with you. Did they promptly return your call? Were they on time to come and see the job? Did they take the time to fully investigate the problem? Did they ask good questions and provide you with options?
  3. Communication. Unless you have a special knowledge of plumbing, you can find the whole process confusing. You want a plumber who will make certain that you know what you need and what you are getting. Did the plumber explain the problem in terms you could understand? Was he or she clear about how much the job would cost? Were they willing to provide a written estimate of all costs? If your plumber does a poor job of communicating before you hire them, they will probably do a poor job of communicating after you hire them.
  4. Referrals. It is appropriate to ask the plumber for the name and number of former customers. Call former customers and ask about the level of service, the timeliness of the work, and the quality of the final product.
