Evaluating the Reasons to Install a Tankless Water Heater

The Most Compelling Advantages of a Tankless System

Reasons to Install a Tankless Water HeaterIf you’ve talked to anyone about your options for delivering hot water to your shower, dishwasher, washing machine or tap, you’ve certainly heard a variety of “benefits” attributed to the systems. Here’s a look at some of the advantages typically cited, with our assessment of how important they should be in your evaluation:

  • Tankless systems offer an unlimited amount of hot water—This is without a doubt the most compelling reason to go with a tankless system. Even if you have a large tank in your traditional water heater, there’s always the risk that you’ll use hot water faster than you can heat it. That doesn’t happen with a tankless system.
  • Tankless water heaters use less space— A traditional hot water heater requires space comparable to an entire closet. A tankless system can be mounted on the wall in a closet, leaving plenty of room for other uses. In fact, in places like Dallas (and throughout the South), you may be able to put your tankless water heater outside your home or building, so that you free up all the space inside.
  • Tankless systems typically have a greater lifespan—A tankless water heater will typically last significantly longer than a traditional water heater—for two primary reasons. First, the tankless is only running when you need hot water, so there’s less wear and tear on the parts. Second, the tankless doesn’t have to store water, which is often where traditional water heaters develop problems that shorten lifespan.
  • Tankless water heaters deliver immediate hot water—Technically, no system delivers immediate hot water, as you’ll always have some cold water in the pipes. A circulation pump will eliminate this. A tankless water heater won’t.
  • You’ll save money with a tankless water heater—While this is certainly true, the actual savings are not that dramatic…typically anywhere from $50 to $150 per year. Those cost savings can be eaten up with maintenance costs, if your water requires that the system be flushed on an annual basis.
  • Tankless systems are relatively maintenance-free—There are generally fewer maintenance requirements with a tankless, but you may need to have your system flushed once a year, depending on the quality of your water.
