What is the Difference Between Hybrid and Tankless Water Heaters?

November 18, 2021 | Blog

With so much new information on water heaters and its function, many homeowners don’t have much idea on what are the differences. To make it simple: all water heaters are not the same. They are different based on size, energy-saving, and installation depending on what you’re looking for in your home.

Hybrid Water Heaters

Hybrid electric water heaters, also known as heat pumps, run on electricity, and not on natural gas or propane. What makes the hybrid heater interesting is the way it heats the water. Instead of relying on energy to create heat for the water, it uses the heat in the surrounding area to pump and heat water.

Efficiency and Energy Saving

The hybrid water heater is one of the best heaters to have in your home. As mentioned above, this heater saves energy by using the heat of the area and pumping it into the tank to heat the water.

According to Energy Star, hybrid water heaters can save a household of 4 around $350 per year on their electric bill. Larger families that use more water are more likely to save even more money when they switch to a hybrid water heater.

The Installation Process

When you decide to get a hybrid water heater, the installation process is very easy. This heater is very thin and easy to install – ideally for tight spaces such as the basement or garage. Another important factor is this heater has the same connections as any standard water heater.

If you still aren’t sure whether a hybrid water heater is worth it, the average lifespan is around 13-15 years, 3-5 years longer than the traditional standard water heater!

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters, also known as demand-type, are very common in households. They run on natural gas or electricity, much like a traditional water heater. However, this is more of an “on-demand” water heater, because they depend on electricity to heat water instead of storing the hot water.

Efficiency and Energy Saving

Compared to the traditional water heater, tankless water heaters are very energy-efficient. This heater is popular amongst homeowners as it will heat up only the amount of water you need, saving you energy. According to the Department of Energy, tankless water heaters can be 8-14% more efficient for homes that use a lot of water– around 86 gallons per day.

Tankless Water Heater Installation

Depending on what your home has, the installation process of the tankless will be different based on whether your home uses gas burners or electric coils. During the process, a technician will help adjust the flow rate you would like to put in order to save energy.

If you’re worried about the lifespan of your tankless water heater, they can last around 20 years, 10 years more than a standard water heater!
