What to Look for in a Whole House Water Filtration System

Water Filtration System

How to Know You’re Getting the System That’s Best for You

There are many good reasons to consider installing a whole house water filtration system. It’ll help protect the health of family members and it’ll help you avoid corrosion and damage to pipes and other plumbing fixtures. Here are some of the things you want to know when looking at the different systems that are available:

  • What is the flow rate?—As a general rule, a filter is going to slow down the movement of water into your home. The flow rate of a water filtration system is stated in gallons per minute or GPM. The minimum GPM you’ll need will be based in part on the different plumbing features of your house. How many sinks, showers and toilets do you have, is there a dishwasher, etc. If the water filtration system has a flow rate of less than 10 GPM, you don’t want it.
  • How big is the filter?—The larger your filter, the more water you can move through it at a time and the greater the water pressure can be. You want a filter that’s at least 4.5″ x 20″.
  • What is the port size?—The ideal port size is 1 inch. With a smaller port, you run the risk of bottlenecks during the filtration process.
