What to Do When Your Bathroom Vanity Sink Won't Drain

May 13, 2016 | Blog

Have you noticed that your bathroom vanity sink is starting to pool water, or that it takes a long time for the sink to drain when you fill it? It’s not an uncommon occurrence—unbeknownst to most of us, when we comb our hair in the mirror, we often have some hair fall in the sink. That hair then gets rinsed down the sink, but frequently collects on the underside of the drain plug. What’s the best way to alleviate that problem?

With a bathroom vanity, you will almost always have a pop-up plug, with a small handle that rises up and down through the faucet fixture, allowing you to raise and lower the plug. One option is to simply remove the pop-up plug and clean it off. It’s not a real complicated process, but you will have to disassemble the plug system, clean the plug and put everything back together, a process that can take anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour, based on your experience and skill level.

A simpler method may be to use a plumbing tool called a “Zip-It.” The Zip-It is a fairly stiff, but flexible strip of plastic about 20 inches long and a little less than half an inch wide. The Zip-It has a handle on one end and has little plastic barbs every inch or so on each side. It’s small and flexible enough that you can insert it down your vanity drain without removing the pop-up plug. You simply push it all the way down and then pull back up. Any hair or other debris that’s clogging the drain should get caught on the barbs and you can clean it out of the drain and dispose of it.
