Should You Install Your Own Tankless Water Heater?

February 18, 2019 | Blog

The Thing You Need to Know (and Know How to Do)

Install Your Own Tankless Water HeaterWhether you’re a real do-it-yourselfer or you’re just looking to save some money, you may be considering replacing your traditional water heater with a tankless system, and installing it yourself. That may not be a good idea. Here are some of the things you’ll need to know before you handle the project on your own (as well as some of the things you’ll need to know how to do).

  • Can your system be easily converted? Is the new system compatible with pipes and other components of your existing system?
  • What system do you need?—Tankless systems come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with different features. You need to know about potential usage, flow rates and a number of other technical specifications.
  • How will the water heater fit into your system?—As a general rule, tankless water heaters are sold separately. You’ll need to know what pipes you need and how to integrate the heater into the water delivery system.
  • How do you remove the existing water heater?—This involves turning off the water, draining the tank and disconnecting from electricity and/or gas.
  • What will you do with the old tank? Will your waste hauler pick it up?
  • What type of venting is required for the new system?
  • Will you know how to properly connect the new system to electrical power?
  • Will you need a pressure relief valve discharge line? Do you know how to install one?
  • Are there any restrictions imposed by local building codes?
  • Do you need to make any changes to your homeowner’s insurance?
