Preemptive Plumbing—Taking Proactive Steps to Avoid Plumbing Catastrophes

You only call a plumber when there’s an emergency, right? Or if you are planning new construction or a major remodel? Not necessarily!! A regular maintenance and inspection plan can help you minimize the risk that something devastating will happen. Here are some of the things you can do on a regular basis to protect your home or business.

Your Fixtures

Faucets, valves and fixtures all have a number of parts. The plastic and rubber gaskets and other components can turn brittle, making them susceptible to breakdown. Metal components can accumulate mineral deposits. Here are some guidelines:

  • Check all faucets at least once a year for evidence of leaks or rust. Repair or replace as necessary.
  • Open and close water supply and shut-off valves on a regular basis—these components often stay in the same position unless there’s an emergency. This can make them brittle and subject to cracking.
  • Soak your faucet and shower heads overnight in vinegar to clean mineral deposits

Your Drains

A clogged drain can cause a bigger mess than a broken water pipe. Here are some steps you
can take to minimize the risk that you’ll have a sewage backup in your home:

  • Make certain all drains—shower, sink and floor—have strainers that prevent large items from blocking the lines
  • Don’t overuse your garbage disposal—Garbage disposals are really designed for scraps and items that easily break down. Put large items in the trash barrel.
  • If you don’t use a drain very often, pour a bucket of water into it on a periodic basis. It will keep the trap full of water and minimize odors in the house
