Finding the Right Plumber — Solutions for Your Business

December 18, 2012 | Blog

When you need a water heater for your business, there are a number of options from which to choose. The type of unit you select can depend on your budget and your needs. This blog post looks at the different types of commercial water heaters, identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each.

At Public Service Plumbers, we have set the standard of excellence for reliability and customer service for more than 50 years. We make our services available throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Choosing a Commercial Water Heater

The types of water heaters available generally vary based on what type of energy is used to heat the water. Your choices include natural gas, propane, electric powered units. You can also opt for tankless water heaters. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each:

  1. Natural gas—Natural gas water heaters are easy to install. In today’s economy, natural gas water heaters also provide a cheaper source of hot water, about half the cost of propane, and about one-third the cost of electric. Natural gas water heaters recover quickly, so that you replenish your supply of hot water in a relatively short time period. The fast recovery rate also means that you don’t need a large tank to store hot water, and may be able to use a tankless water heater, one that simply heats water on demand. Natural gas water heaters also have a strong record of providing safe and reliable energy for hot water. Finally, natural gas is available directly to your home in most municipalities. You don’t need to take steps to secure delivery of gas or store gas on your property (as you must with propane).
  2. Propane gas—Propane gas water heaters offer many of the advantages of natural gas. They also have a quick recovery time, and can allow you to go tankless. A distinct disadvantage of propane is that you have a limited tank. You can run the risk that you will run out of propane, and you must rely on the propane provider to deliver fuel on a timely basis. In addition, propane is generally more expensive than natural gas. If you live in a rural area where natural gas is not available, propane is a better alternative than electric.
  3. Electric—Electric water heaters are more expensive to operate than gas, and they have a much slower recovery time. If, however, you live in a rural area without access to natural gas, an electric water heater can be a viable alternative. You won’t have to store gas on your property, and will always have hot water, as long as you have electricity.
