Dallas Faucet Repair and Installation

July 25, 2018 | Blog

Do It Yourself or Hire a Plumber?

Our Dallas faucet experts understand that a leaky faucet can be an annoyance in a number of ways—the constant drip can get on your nerves, but it can also cost you money…it may seem like a minor thing, but you can lose gallons of water every month.

Repairing or installing a new faucet can often seem like a simple task, one that you can accomplish by yourself. Your leaky faucet can, on the other hand, be a symptom of a much larger problem. Your faucet typically has a number of parts that can contribute to a leak, including gaskets and O-rings. Without a solid knowledge of what you’re doing, you can spin your wheels trying to stop the leak. Even installing a new faucet can be problematic—if you don’t put it in right, you may have difficulties with pressure or the integrity of the water delivery. It’s always a good idea to bring in a professional—you’ll rest easy knowing the problem has been resolved.

If you do decide to try to repair or replace a faucet on your own, here are some helpful tips:

  • Have a bucket ready to catch any water already in your drain and water lines—After you shut off the water, the first thing you’ll typically do is disconnect the water supply and drain lines. Have a bucket handy to catch any water that’s still in those lines.
  • If you don’t have shutoff valves, install them: This may require that you turn off the water to the house, but it will make all further repairs much easier.
  • Determine the size of your fittings—If necessary, bring the old fitting with you to the hardware store.
  • Make certain you have the right tools—One of the most important is a “basin” wrench, specifically designed to take care of those difficult to reach fasteners on old faucets.
  • Don’t get in over your head—If you run into problems, don’t make them worse by forging ahead. In the long run, you may save a lot of money by just calling a plumber.
