Shower icon width=At some point in time, you’ll likely need to replace the showerhead in your shower. Overtime, showerheads can become clogged or, if it hasn’t been replaced for a long time, it may not deliver enough flow rate or water pressure. If you exercise regularly and look forward to a hot shower to soothe your muscles, you might want a showerhead that offers different settings for a pulsating spray or jet. If you have pets, you may want a hand-held showerhead that allows you to bathe them when needed.

So, how do you go about buying and replacing a showerhead?

Considering Different Kinds of Showerheads

In general, there are six different kinds of showerheads, each with its advantages and limitations:

  • Water Saving – Constructed to save water and usually aerated to add pressure to the water stream. Excellent in homes where water pressure is a problem
  • Massage – Constructed to deliver a spray, jet, or mist
  • Rain – Typically placed higher up and directly overhead in order to replicate rain. Water is delivered evenly and gently. Best in homes with excellent water pressure
  • Fixed – Attached to a shower arm that is affixed to the wall
  • Hand-held – Typically attached to a flexible hose that allows you to hold the showerhead in your hand and move it around when showering. Most hand-held showers either fasten to a clip or can be placed in a holder fastened to the wall or on the shower itself
  • Dual – Showerheads that can be used as either a wand or fixed type of showerhead. Dual showerheads often offer a large variety of spray and massage settings

Installing Your New Showerhead

In many cases, changing out an older or unsatisfactory showerhead is a simple, straightforward manner. Most hardware stores sell showerheads that include everything you need to install a new showerhead. However, in cases where you’d like to install a rain or body spray showerhead, you might need to install special valves or piping. If this is the case, you’ll need to cut into your walls and add additional plumbing. Here, it’s a good idea to consult a professional plumber since these issues potentially involve complications that could require remodeling or preventative steps to avoid leaks and water damage.
