Why You Might Still Want a Tanked Water Heater

Public Service Plumbers LogoIf you need to replace an old water heater, or you’re building a new home, you may consider it a no-brainer that you’ll install a tankless water heater. There are certainly many good reasons to consider tankless systems—they take up far less space, they can be more efficient (if you use less water) and you may not have to worry about running out of hot water. But there are reasons why you may still want to use a traditional, or tanked, water heater.

  • The cost of installing a tankless water heater can easily be twice as much as installing a traditional water heater — It’s a more complex process to put a tankless water heater in your house, particularly if you are replacing a tanked, or traditional water heater. In addition to the water pipes, you have to think about gas lines, piping and meters, or electrical upgrades, if that’s your heat source.
  • It may actually take longer to get hot water with a tankless — If your tankless only fires up when it senses flow, you can’t expect hot water immediately, but will need to wait until the unit is fired up. You may need to add a circulation system to your hot water.
  • Your tankless water heater may require more maintenance than a traditional water heater. For example, a tankless water heater will typically require de-liming at least once a year.
  • Tankless water heaters provide more value to families and homes that use more water. If your water usage is fairly minimal, you may see little advantage to a tankless system.
