Why You Don't Want to Install Your Own Gas Water Heater

June 13, 2016 | Blog

Gas water heater

If you do a simple search on YouTube, you’ll find countless videos that offer to show you how to install a gas water heater, some in as little as five minutes! But it’s a dangerous proposition. As experienced plumbers, we know that there are many things that can go wrong with a gas water heater installation if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. That’s why there are extensive codes and regulations governing every aspect of the process, including where lines can be laid, how gas connections must be made, and how the tanks must be installed. In fact, most municipalities require that the installation of a gas water heater be inspected and approved, and many mandate that you obtain a permit to install a gas device.

Most people think of the risk of explosions tied to gas, and those concerns are valid. Natural gas and propane are highly volatile and even a spark from static can ignite the gas. But an improperly installed gas water heater can also lead to asphyxiation. As gas collects in the air, it replaces the oxygen. When your body is deprived of oxygen, you’ll customarily feel tired or experience chest pain. If you experience these symptoms during waking hours, you can immediately go outdoors, but if you’re sleeping, it could be fatal.

A similar risk is carbon monoxide poisoning. If you don’t correctly install the gas water heater and the natural gas does not completely burn, it can emit carbon monoxide as a byproduct. Carbon monoxide also replaces the oxygen in your home, posing serious risk of injury.
