Thinking about Getting a Tankless Water Heater?

August 25, 2016 | Blog

Maybe you’re building a new house, or maybe your existing water heater is on its last leg, and you’ve heard about those new tankless water heaters. Are they all they’re cracked up to be or is it just marketing hype? Here’s our take on tankless water heaters.

A tankless water heater can be a great fit for your house, can potentially save you money while providing continuous hot water, and can do all that in a space much smaller than a traditional water heater. But there are some caveats.

The first thing you want to do, if you’ve decided to go tankless, is to purchase a product from a reputable dealer who’s been in business for a number of years. Unfortunately, tankless water heater companies come and go pretty quickly. You might get a good deal on a great product, but run into problems if you need service and the company folds. At Public Service Plumbers, we recommend Rheem tankless water heaters. Rheem is a well-respected and long-established provider of high quality plumbing products.

Another factor to be aware of is cost. As a general rule, you will pay significantly more for a tankless heater than a traditional water heater, often up to three times as much for a tankless heater with the same capacity as a traditional water heater. In addition, the costs of installation are often significantly more. Estimates suggest that a traditional water heater (40 gallon) may cost about $600 installed, but a tankless water heater with similar capacity can cost over $2,000 to install.

All that being said, there are many advantages to the tankless water heaters:

  • They typically fit in a space the size of a medicine cabinet
  • They only heat water when you need it, saving energy costs, but they also provide hot water for as long as you need it—no risk of running out of hot water
  • Most well-made products are easy to maintain, and allow you to adjust water temperature with relative ease
