Choosing a Water Filtration System

November 2, 2016 | Blog

Filters for Drinking Water Purification
Do you get your drinking water from a tap? If so, it’s probably in your best interests to invest in a water filtration system, as studies show that well water and city water often contain a number of contaminants—in fact, a 2009 study tallied up more than 300 different pollutants in drinking water across the country. The situation can be worse if you live near farm or industrial operations. In addition, if you live in an older home with lead pipes, you may need to filter the water coming out of the tap, even if it’s clean coming into your house.

Signs That You May Need a Water Filtration System

It’s always best to test your water, even if you think it’s okay or aren’t aware of any specific problems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a Safe Water Hotline (1-(214) 753-4633) where you can get all the information you need. The actual test typically costs around $20.

If you notice a smell to your water or if it has an unusual taste, it’s likely that you’ll need a filter.

Where to Filter

If your water has few contaminants, or if the contaminants are only dangerous when ingested, you can probably protect yourself with a tap-mounted filtration device, such as the Brita, that attaches directly to the faucet. However, if there’s a strong taste or smell to your water, you probably want to filter it before it comes into your home. For most types of contaminants, a simple carbon-based filter should be adequate.
